We live in busy times.

The challenge of juggling both personal and professional objectives within the waking hours is no easy feat for anyone. The achievement of work and life equilibrium remains a holy grail quest for most of us. If you’re always feeling like there’s not enough hours in the day then you needn’t feel alone.

There’s only 24 hours in the day. This is a constant and there’s no more than 24.

We can sacrifice our weekends to attend to the business/job related activities not accomplished Monday to Friday, however this impinges on our ability to maintain some semblance of work and life equilibrium. The novelty of compromising our weekend rest and relaxation time soon wears off. Heaven forbid we’d sacrifice leave time for work purposes.

One solution is to leverage one’s time by leaving selected personal and business matters to experts who have the necessary knowledge, time and the required resources to do it for you. It’s a sign of the times that we’ve seen the rise and rise of the planning vocations. Who amongst us hasn’t used some form of planner ? The wedding planner, the event planner, the meal planner, the financial planner etc. etc. There are appealing upsides to accessing dedicated, specialist and experienced planners who can do the heavy lifting on important tasks to free up our time. Their increasing prominence is no coincidence. Their value shouldn’t be underestimated nor undervalued during the balancing act process.

We entrust important and time intensive tasks to planners – yet how many of us have the time, expertise and awareness to plan our careers ? We wouldn’t leave a wedding to fate or left unattended yet we commonly neglect our careers.

Consequently, careers are commonly left unmanaged and directionless. Fate as well as factors beyond our control including the decisions and intentions of others combine to navigate career direction or lack of direction.

We’ve inadvertently abdicated, overlooked or ignored our career and planning it. Our career window is a subset of our life window. If we’re not managing it, planning it and caring for it then who will ? We only get one life window and within that, we only get one career window too – ultimately both close on us. Neglect your career window at your own peril.

The very event which influences our lives being our career and workforce involvement commonly gets overlooked.

If you don’t have the time, the industry knowledge, the skills nor the confidence to tackle the planning of your career then why not leave it to a “career planner”. This will be someone who has your priorities, objectives and best interests at heart. A career planner might be someone drawn from such disciplines as a mentor, life coach, someone within your industry or profession who’s experienced and can share objectively and informatively their insights and experiences with you or someone who you draw inspiration from or a role model who you aspire to emulate.

One of the ideal people who you could establish an association with for career planning purposes is a recruitment consultant. One who you can trust, be objective, confidential, will share key insights into an industry or profession and offer informed and tailored advice for guiding you along a career path to act as your “career planner”. Many will voluntarily provide their time, market knowledge and direction.

So, why not be clever about leveraging your time, picking the brains of others, re-gaining control of your career and maximising the opportunities within your career window and ultimately your life window by developing an association with a recruitment consultant.

Time to start career planning ?
